The dispersion trench "The Trench"

This wasn't anything we wanted - the County made us do it as part of getting an occupancy permit. A lot more could be said, but I'll stop here (you can read more if you like).

To complete The Trench, our contractor excavated 1,000 cubic feet of earth, added a control structure (a collector), laid 180 feet of drain pipe and filled the hole with 60 tons of drain rock.

To prepare for this contractors had laid pipe for footer drains around the house, downspout drains from the garage and the house, drains under the decks, and joined all of these at the southwest corner of the house waiting to hook up to The Trench to complete the requirements.

The Trench was supposed to collect stormwater that fell on the roofs, drained down the gutter downspouts, joined water from the footer drains and went to The Trench. From there the stormwater was supposed to flow south-westward across the wetland buffer on our property to be dispersed, presumably into the wetland.

However, the topology of that part of the property routed the drainage directly into the drainage ditch. Of, course, you say, "Isn't that what a drainage ditch is for?"" Not according to the county who insisted that there be no direct flows of water into the drainage ditch.

So, The Trench is a costly requirement that doesn't achieve the result that the County intended. And guess who paid?
